Course Description:
Entertainment Industry Collegium is a course offering weekly discussions of contemporary music industry issues and trends, content analysis, and integrated practicum experience. EI students have an opportunity to hear and interact with guest artists and speakers, prepare and present their own programs/performances, review and critique media products, and work in different aspects of the industry through student media based organizations. Students are encouraged and enabled to use the Collegium to network and work with each other, expanding their professional and personal spheres, while creating and organizing collaborative productions and projects.

MCOM 1813 - Intro to Video Production
Course Description:
Entertainment Industry Survey is a course designed to deliver and discuss an overview of the entertainment industry’s scope, practices, and systems. Through researching of past and present industry events and their outcomes, the course will establish an introductory and critical lense of the music, film, and broadcast businesses. This course is also an opportunity to learn from established professionals via in person visits and video conferences to provide multiple opinions on entrepreneurial and creative endeavors.

MCOM 2753 - Intro to Audio Production
Course Description:

This course is a seminar in audio production theory and practices. It is intended to provide students with theoretical knowledge of and scholarly experience in sound engineering and audio production, along with professional development resources and processes. Topics may include: acoustics, harmonics, sound envelopes, sound design, metering systems, experimental sound, acoustic ecology, electricity and electronics, signal flow, mixing, digital audio technology, microphone technology, studio design, microphone techniques and recording methods and practices.

MCOM 3863 - Radio & Podcast Production
Course Description:
Concert Production, as a course, covers the practice, equipment, and management of the technical aspects of live productions. Primary topics include live sound reinforcement, installation and operation. Utilizing common analog audio technologies like speakers, amplifiers, monitors, mixers, microphones, etcetera, the course will explore all aspects of developing a concert production from inception to completion.

This course covers legal, commercial, and managerial aspects of live entertainment presentations and promotions. Topics include: applicable labor laws and union regulations; financing, insurance and taxation; production team; scheduling and touring logistics; health, fire, and safety laws compliance and their financial implications; risk management; ticketing; promotion, performance, and vendor contracts, production and venue forms.

Sound for the Image (8W2) is designed to evaluate, critique, and discuss the various aspects of sound and its interaction with film and television. By actively viewing films with an emphasis on music, voice, foley, and design, the course establishes the basic components of sound for moving image. Expanding on the elements of the basic components, the course will explore their complex interactions and how sound informs space, time, character, and narrative.

Course Description:

Introduction to Audio Synthesis is a course designed to explore the fundamental principles of audio synthesis and the core functions that construct a synthesizer. Students participating in MCJ 492 will receive practical experience with software based synthesizers as stand alone digital audio workstations and as plugins for use in recording environments. In conjunction with skill-based learning goals, students will be exposed to conceptual elements regarding synthesis in music, sampling, and remix culture.
